U.S. sales advance 14% in June amid signs of slowdown

U.S. light-vehicle sales rose 14 percent in June, with major automakers posting some of their smallest gains of the year amid signs of sagging consumer confidence and a cloudier economic outlook.

Ford Motor Co.‘s 13 percent advance from June 2009 was its smallest monthly increase since November. General Motors Co. recorded an 11 percent increase, its second-smallest in the year’s first half. Industry sales on a seasonally adjusted annual basis were 11.1 million, the lowest since February.

All major automakers except Toyota reported double-digit U.S. sales gains in May, as the light-vehicle sales rate hit its highest level since December. Sales rose 19 percent from May 2009, marking the eighth-straight monthly increase, the longest such streak since June 2000, according to Bloomberg Data. The seasonally adjusted annual sales rate hit 11.8 million, beating analysts’ predictions for demand in the low-11-million-unit range.

Ford, Honda Discounts Drive Longest Streak of Gains in 10 Years

DETROIT (Bloomberg) — Ford Motor Co., Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. added rebates and discounts to attract buyers over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, driving what may be the longest streak of sales increases in almost 10 years.

Industrywide deliveries probably reached a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 11.2 million light vehicles in May, according to the average of eight analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. If sales did exceed the 9.9 million rate from a year earlier, it would mean eight straight months of increases for the first time since a stretch that ended in June 2000, according to Bloomberg Data.

Sales during the Memorial Day weekend in the past three years ran about 40 percent higher than the typical May weekend, and sales on the last day of the month were more than double the average day, according to researcher Edmunds.com.

Freelance news photographer Richard J. McCormack spotted what appeared to be a dinosaur over the tree line as he rode a bus in Jersey City today.

From the windows of a bus in Jersey City today, freelance news photographer and other passengers spotted what appeared to be a dinosaur in the distance, towering over the tree line.

Kids were squealing with delight and parents were baffled — could it be a movie set? — until the bus drew nearer and the mystery was solved.

The dinosaur was one of several giants prehistoric balloons outside a Route 440 car dealership, doing a good job of attracting attention.

The dealership’s“Click to Own” program engages internet customers on a more personal level by providing perks like reserved parking and a special waiting lounge for when they visit the dealership.
