Ford, Toyota, Honda and Subaru sales vault; GM down 20%, Chrysler down 15.4%

Largest boost in Ford sales since July 2005

Ford, Toyota and American Honda posted August U.S. sales increases, while Chrysler Group’s and General Motors’ declines were worse than the previous month, as the government’s cash-for-clunkers program lifted industry demand to its highest levels this year.

The results were worse than analysts’ forecasts, but enough to sustain industry predictions that sales would pass the 1-million-unit mark for the first time since August 2008.

Preliminary Industry LV SAAR Forecast 14.0; previous month at 11.2. This assumes an industry volume of ~1,257k. Retail SAAR of 12.6 ~1,126k unit sales.
 


TMS sales of 225,088 were up 10.5% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 211,533. TMS car sales of 155,139 were up 24.3% and truck/SUV sales of 69,949 were down -11.3%. 
Preliminary share of 17.9%
 


GM Corp. sales of 246,479 were down -16.3% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 305,782. GM car sales of 118,744 were down -6.5% and truck/SUV sales of 127,735 were down -23.7%. 
Preliminary share of 19.5%
 


Ford (F/L/M) sales of 176,323 were up 21.7% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 150,448. Ford car sales of 65,654 were up 29.4% and truck/SUV sales of 110,669 were up 17.5%.

Chrysler, LLC sales of 93,222 were down -12.2% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 110,235. Chrysler LLC car sales of 22,638 were down -21.1% and truck/SUV sales of 70,584 were down -8.9%.

Honda (H/A) sales of 161,439 were up 14.2% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 146,855. Honda car sales of 106,972 were up 27.9% and truck/SUV sales of 54,467 were down -5.8%.

Nissan (N/I) sales of 105,312 were up 0.8% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 108,493. Nissan car sales of 78,166 were up 43.7% and truck/SUV sales of 27,146 were down -45.8%; Best Ever Nissan Div.
Preliminary share of 8.4%


Mazda sales of 26,542 were up 16.4% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 23,680. Mazda car sales of 20,772 were up 40.2% and truck/SUV sales of 5,770 were down -27.7%.

Kia sales of 40,198 were up 66.5% (dsr % change) vs. last Aug sales of 25,065. Kia car sales of 23,430 were up 76.6% and truck/SUV sales of 16,768 were up 54.3%.
